The practice of Landscape Architecture might be summarised as:
"Landscape Architecture is the study and understanding of the earths natural process' and the design of integrated solutions, enabling man and his environment to thrive in a sustainable, synergistic relationship."
Just as Architecture is the design and organisation interior spaces, Landscape Architecture is the design and organisation of external spaces. For successful integration of a building into its' site and surroundings, it is essential that a Landscape Architect be included in the design team from the beginning of the design process.
In Singapore with land availability and price at a premium it is even more important that the space that surrounds a building, (be it a house, condominium, civic or commercial development) is carefully planned to maximise the physical and mental benefits that a well designed landscape can provide.
The role of the landscape architect
The Landscape Architect's professional responsibility is to act as the client's adviser based upon a clear understanding of the Client's requirements, and to administer any contract between the Client and the Contractor impartially and fairly.
The relationship between the Landscape Architect and Client
A good working relationship between the Client and the Landscape Consultant is essential when proceeding with a project: The Client has an important role to play in the process: They must provide adequate information on the project, site and budget and fully understand, and approve, the Landscape Architect's proposals, at various stages of the work.
The landscape architect as a professional
Members of SILA work under the professional codes of conduct of The Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA).
